| APRIL or MAY: Hall of Fame Dinner. This is one of the major fund raisers for the Democrats of Clinton County. The actual date depends on the calendar of our keynote speaker. | ||||||||||||||||||
| The Off-Year Caucus, Sunday afternoon, March 6, was a huge success. Approximately a hundred Democrats gathered to meet four candidates for Congress, to talk to their State Legislators and to discuss issues affecting the American people. Following are a few of the beliefs that were commonly expressed at the round table discussions: | ||||||||||||||||||
| 1. Every American citizen is entitled to first class medical care. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 2 .Psychological problems should be recognized as being important causes of physical ailments and should be covered by health insurance. Curing psychological problems could save on the eventual cost of health care. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 3. There is strong opposition to the proposal to privatize (or use for private investment) any part of the present social security taxes. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 4.; Discussion participantsdon't believe that Social Security is in immediate danger and that it will be in trouble if some of the taxes are diverted to Wall Street investment bankers. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 5. The "No Child Left Behind" law has caused chaos in the schools. The program must be revised to prevent bankrupting resources at the State and local levels. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 6. State funding for education must be adequate to maintain excellent programs from pre-school through higher education | ||||||||||||||||||
| 7. All Federal and State mandates should be fully funded. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 8. Responsible budgeting at the State and Federal levels must restrain making cuts in programs that will have horrific effects on families and communities. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 9. There is strong opposition to drilling for oil in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. It is unnecessary and will destroy a valuable national treasure. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 10. We need to support more programs that promote energy efficiency and conservation. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 11. We need government incentives to further develop alternative sources of power such as wind, biomass, environment friendly hydroelectric and nuclear, soy diesel and the use of ethanol. | ||||||||||||||||||
| 12.The Clinton County Democratic Party should be active in getting young people interested and involved in politics and government. | ||||||||||||||||||
| ACTION PLANS: We need to make our beliefs known by writing letters to editors and to our State Legislators, Congressmen and Senators. | ||||||||||||||||||
| WILL THE INCREDIBLE PROPOSALS NEVER END? | ||||||||||||||||||
| "No one voted on election day to destroy the ArticNationalWildlifeRange. Yet, President Bush is now claiming a mandate to do exactly that. The White House and Congressional leaders are pushing for a quick vote on legislation that will turn America's greatest sanctuary for Arctic wildlife into a vast polluted oil field." | ||||||||||||||||||
| "President Bush knows full well that oil drilled in the Refuge will take years to get to market and will never equal more than a paltry one or two percent of our nation's daily consumption. Sacrificing the Arctic Refuge will do nothing to reduce gas prices or break our dangerous addiction to Persian Gulf oil." | ||||||||||||||||||
| "The Bush Administration is dead set on destroying it. They want to break the back of America's natural heritage." (Robert Redford, spokesman for the Natural Resources Defense Council) | ||||||||||||||||||
| THE SCHOLAR FROM YALE | ||||||||||||||||||
| Mr. Bush has an amazing knowledge of history gained from four years of "intense study" at Yale, a very prestigious University. Mr. Bush said earlier this month that we have enjoyed a long cordial friendship with Japan dating back 150 Years. Mr. Bush, did you know that on March 9, 1945, U.S. warplanes launched a bombing offensive against Japan, dropping 2,000 tons of incendiary bombs on Tokyo. Almost 16 square miles in and around the Japanese capital were incinerated, and between 80,000 and 130,000 Japanese civilians were killed in the worst single firestorm in recorded history. | ||||||||||||||||||
