THERE ARE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM  HISTORY
"Should  any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance  and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party  again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that  believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires,  and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is  negligible and they are stupid."  (Republican President Dwight D.  Eisenhower, in a letter  to his brother, Edgar, in 1954)

ECONOMIC  DEVELOPMENT
Since ancient times economic  development has followed the routes of transportation -- rivers, canals, chariot  and stagecoach roads, railroads and highways.
"Making highway 30 four lanes across  Iowa and connecting with Interstate 88 near Rock Falls is essential to the  economic development of Clinton County.  New industry and distribution centers want four lane highways to their  facilities. Right now there are  just two major routes into Iowa, both on Interstate 80.  You can become an important part of the  lobbying effort by writing letters or sending emails to our State and Federal  Representatives and Senators, and to the seven members of the Iowa Department of  Transportation. Information about  the proposed project can be obtained by going to the website of the U.S. Highway  30 Coalition of Iowa.  You'll also  find addresses and email links to our representatives. http://www.fourlane30.com/     " [NOTE those links are also HERE.]

THE  TRANSPORTATION BILL PASSES THE HOUSE AND SENATE
Last week the U.S. Senate passed the  long awaited transportation bill.  The Senate bill allocates $295. billion. The House bill provides $284  billion. The bill now goes to a  conference committee.  There is  $400. million in the bill for Iowa.  We're hoping that much of this will be spent on making both highway 20  and 30 four lanes.  There should be  funds available for the Liberty  Square and 19th Avenue North Projects.  That part depends on decisions made by the Department of Transportation  (DOT). They need to hear from  you.
A  COMPRENSIVE ENERGY BILL IS LONG OVER-DUE
President  Jimmy Carter warned us many years ago that it was vital to the nation's security  to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.   Starting with Ronald Reagan, everything that President Carter recommended  has been ignored.  The Federal  government definitely should have a role in providing incentives for developing  alternative sources of energy. We can't afford to waste another quarter of a  century in coming to terms with our dependence on imported  oil.
Contrary to some opinions Senator  Charles Grassley is suppose to represent all the people of Iowa, not just the  Republicans. If you would like to  keep track of what he's doing, go to his website:http://grassley.senate.gov/
