A RECENT GALLUP survey shows that only 39 percent of Americans think the nation is headed in the right direction, while 58 percent say the country is going the wrong way.   The Democratic Party needs to make known their plans for the social and economic well being of all Americans.

Pitching to the Democratic Team
Pitching hard balls for  "A Winning Game Plan for Democrats"  in the First Congressional District is the subject of the Saturday, June 18, 2005 workshop at the Northeast Iowa Community College Campus in Peosta.  The First District Congressional seat and Iowa House and Senate seats are up for a series of home runs if the twelve counties of the district develop their running, hitting and catching skills.
Party officers, candidates, elected officials, and active volunteers are all part of the team.  Plan to have lunch with the State Senators and Representatives from the twelve counties that make up the First Congressional District.
The day long workshop will cover three types of material: issues, technical and party building.  Registration will be from 9:00-9:30 A.M. with a ten dollar donation that includes lunch.  An opening session will feature the candidates for Congress, followed by one on "Framing the Issue" based on George Lakoff's book  " Don't Think of an Elephant"   There will be three break out sessions from which participants will need to select one to attend.   To end the day, a wine-down reception will be held at the AmericInn near the college with a TBA special guest.  (Jean Pardee)

DEMOCRATS RESPECT LIFE AT ALL STAGES
Every time the Republicans want to control the freedoms of individuals they propose laws or even constitutional amendments.   At other times they rant and rave about getting government off their backs.  History has shown that if a law is unenforceable, it will make the situation worse and just create more criminals.  Some Democratic members of Congress are proposing a program that will reduce the number of abortions by 95% percent over the next ten years.
The initiative includes 17 different elements that would encourage adoption, fund pregnancy prevention, prenatal care, pregnancy counseling, day care and children's nutrition and prohibit insurance practices that discriminate against pregnant women.   These social programs have seen drastic funding cuts in the last four years. What has been the result?
The abortion rate has gone up 37% during the Bush Administration.   Why are they too dumb to see the connection between economic levels and the abortion rate, education and the crime rate?  It's all about POWER and winning elections, not preventing abortions.
Many people talk about protecting life.  These Democrats are proposing policies that will actually reduce the number of abortions.  The plan will reduce abortions by offering alternatives that promote family, promote adoption and provide education and support for new mothers.  The program would provide aid for mothers to continue their education and offer day-care services.  Grants would be offered to promote and implement centers where babies can be left by mothers who are unable to care for them.
The proposed legislation initiative will communicate to pregnant women that the community is behind them to carry their babies to term.   The plan makes huge advances in our support of pregnant women, children and families.  (This information is based on an article printed in the May 12, 2005 issue of The Catholic Messenger.)
