| BUSH'S NEXT TARGET: NATIONAL PUBLIC BROADCASTING | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Many of us depend upon National Public Radio and Television for accurate information. Evidently the Bush Administration doesn't want us to get the truth. It infuriates me that NPR and NPTV are their next targets. The U. S. House of Representatives is proposing to reduce federal funding by 45% this year. This will have a severe impact on the operations of WVIK and IPTV. Reliable public broadcasting is one of the worthiest places to invest federal funds. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In an unexpected move yesterday afternoon the House of Representatives approved a measure to restore $100 million of funding for NPR, PBS and local public stations. Republican leaders were proposing to slash $200 million from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. More than one million people signed petitions calling on Congress to reverse course. And over 40,000 made phone calls to their elected representatives. There was a surge of public outrage that couldn't be ignored. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| However, the fight isn't over. The Republicans have been trying to destroy Public Broadcasting for years and they'll keep trying. It's important that you contact your Congressmen and Senators on this issue. We have demonstrated that this kind of public pressure is important. There are links to our Congressmen and Senators on our website For more information you may use the WVIK website www.wvik.org | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETING | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (Tuesday, June 21, 2005) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We are very appreciative of the many precinct committee members who each month attend the central committee meetings and keep the activities of the Clinton County Democratic Party moving along. All year long organization is essential if we-re to successfully elect Democratic candidates and adopt Democratic values into government programs. We need continual visibility. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Special topics discussed at the June meeting were: 1. The District workshop and the philosophy of ";Framing the Issues". 2. Participation in parades during July. 3. Participation in the County Fair. 4. Planning a CountyWorkshop on Framing the Issues. 5. Reports by Representative Polly Bukta and Sheriff Rick Lincoln. 6. Introduction of our Iowa Democratic Party summer intern, Sara Wherry, and two young members of Rick Dickinson's staff, Megan Simpson and Nate Beecher. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
