I MISS BILL!!

Last week Connie and I spent a full day visiting the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in     Little Rock.   Reliving the good days of the 1990’s was a very pleasant experience.  Those were the days when we had an administration that balanced the budget, reduced the national debt, forecast a budget surplus, supported programs for education that worked, supported policies that protected the environment, supplied our people with clean drinking water and cooperated with other nations in investigating the causes of global warming.  We had a President who was highly respected around the world.

I picked up twenty-five bumper stickers at the Center that say “I MISS BILL” and will be selling them to raise money for the Clinton Democratic Party.  (Dick Kissack)

”Let us resolve to build a bridge to the 21st Century.”  (Bill Clinton)

Food Assistance Used by 25 Million Americans

“A new survey shows that more that 25 million Americans receive emergency food assistance each year. According to the report, two of the largest groups that receive food from food banks, soup kitchens and shelters are women and single parents.” (Howard Berkes Nation Public Radio, 2-23-06)

More than 9% of the population has to sacrifice money for prescription drugs, utilities and rent in order to have money for food.  This is a predictable result of cuts in social programs during the past five years and low wages.  In a nation as rich as ours this situation should be intolerable.

THIS WE BELIEVE

(Taken from the Clinton County Democratic Party 2006 platform.)

Ø       We encourage the legislature to support funding for low and moderate income housing.

Ø       We support the creation of a national health care plan to include all citizens.

Ø       We oppose the recent budget reconciliation bill which cuts funding for many vital services for the most vulnerable people.  Funding for these services should be restored.

HERE’S HOW PRESIDENT BUSH PLANS TO TAKE CARE OF AMERICANS

“Just a few weeks ago, the House of Representatives cut $16 billion from Medicaid over 10 years, which means states will increase co-payments on poor people and drop preventive care -- which will cost more in the long run, but what the hey. They also cut $12.7 billion in student aid and loan programs over five years, because who needs that? And cut another $1.5 billion in child support enforcement in the next year, which is positively brilliant and will result in a drop of at least $8.4 billion in child support collected over the next 10 years. Oh, and a measly cut of $577 million in foster care over five years, making it harder to take care of neglected and abused children, who probably did something to deserve it in the first place.

”Now here's a little howler: Bush proposes cutting $36 billion from Medicare over the next five years only ... wait for it ... he's not cutting the money, he's saving it!  A $36 billion Medicare savings!  That's so clever.  (Molly Ivens, Tuesday, February 7, 2006)

IS THERE NO END TO THE DECEPTION?

The Bush Administration has announced that for the first time in a half-century the nation’s wetlands are increasing.  The Interior Department’s Fish and Wildlife Service reports a net gain of 191,900 acres of wetlands since the last report in 1997.  The Bush Administration officials cast the report as evidence that the nation has turned the corner on years of wetland losses.  However, State wetland managers and advocacy groups for hunting, fishing, recreational and environmental causes call the report misleading.

These statistics are hard to believe in light of our knowledge of President Bush’s disastrous environmental policies.  We might have known there is a catch. The Bush people have never been known to be friendly to the environment.

Actually during those years there has been a decline of 523,500 acres of marshes, swamps, fens, peatlands, tidal marshes and other more traditional natural wetlands.  In order to demonstrate that the Bush Administration’s policies to increase the wetland acreage are working for the first time they have included water hazards on golf courses, ornamental residential ponds, farm ponds, aquaculture ponds,  storm water retention ponds and wastewater treatment lagoons.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!  SUPPORT DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES.

“Recent reports indicate that Dick Cheney directed "Scooter" Libby to release classified information to discredit critics of the war in Iraq...we've heard hard-to-ignore accusations from a former top CIA official that the White House "cherry picked" intelligence to make the case for war...and we've received stunning evidence that the President sat on his hands and did nothing for 12 hours after the White House had been informed that the levees broke in New Orleans."

“Support Democratic candidates - giving them the help they need to break the Republicans' grip on power.”  (Senator John Kerry)

CAN YOU AFFORD $10,000. TO HAVE YOUR PICTURE TAKEN WITH GEORGE BUSH?

(What would you do with it?)

On April 11, while Jim Nussle welcomes President Bush to meet his friends for $10,000 photo-op, Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Mike Blouin plans to set the table for those left behind.

Mike Blouin, his running mate Dr. Andy McGuire, and Democrats across the State will be holding charity fundraisers in several Iowa cities to highlight the working Iowans who because of Bush and Nussle’s budget can’t afford health insurance, prescription drugs or college education for their children.  While Bush and Nussle smile for the camera, Democrats want to ask the tough questions: Where are Bush and Nussle for the majority of Iowans?  Why have they left so many of Iowans working families behind?  (Mike Blouin for Governor Campaign Committee)

DID YOU KNOW?

v      The cost of energy has gone up 50% since 2000 because of George W. Bush’s devotion to Big Oil and reliance on fossil fuels.

v      Relaxed industrial regulations have degraded the quality of our air and water and put our health at risk.

v      More than six million Americans have lost their health coverage since 2000.

SENATOR HARKIN DEMANDS PLAN FOR SUCCESS IN IRAQ

It has been nearly three years since U.S. troops were first deployed to Iraq. During that time, our courageous men and women in uniform have served proudly under enormously difficult circumstances, and they and their families have sacrificed greatly in service to the nation. But, as many of our military commanders have pointed out, Iraq’s problems ultimately require a political solution that cannot be attained militarily.

Senator Harkin believes that 2006 should be a period of transition to full Iraqi sovereignty, with a goal of deploying U.S. forces out of Iraq by the end of the calendar year. Rather than continue to “stay the course” with no strategy for success or barometer for progress, Senator Harkin has called on the Bush administration to develop a comprehensive plan for stability in Iraq, one that provides measurable benchmarks for success and works toward bringing our troops home by the end of 2006. Congress and the American people deserve to know the challenges posed by the continued presence of U.S. forces in Iraq, to have an accurate accounting of the situation on the ground, and to be informed about the measures the Administration will be taking to bring our troops home.

Because the achievement of peace an stability in Iraq rests in a polital solution, it will require a sustained diplomatic engagement to forge compromise between Iraq’s political leaders, and ensure that all parties have a place at the table. Sectarian violence has surged in recent months. We must make it clear to the Iraqi people that our forces will not remain in Iraq indefinitely. Our forces have served bravely, made countless sacrifices and have completed their military mission. The responsibility for maintaining a broad-based, workable political environment that can defeat the insurgency must ultimately lie with Iraqis. While it is of course necessary for our armed services to have installations while conducting major military operations throughout the world, it must also be made clear that these installations are not permanent in Iraq. It is time to give Iraqis the chance to govern their own nation.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is currently conducting an investigation of the Bush Administration’s manipulation of intelligence to justify the war in Iraq.  It is important for the Senate to work to do everything within its power to make sure that intelligence is not misused or manipulated in the future.

Senator Harkin believes that we should honor the service and sacrifice of our soldiers and their families by responsibly following a clear strategy and working toward bringing our men and women in uniform home by the end of the year.  (Citizens for Harkin)

THE PHILOSOPHY OF MIKHAIL GORBACHEV

“We want a partnership and cooperation with the United States and perhaps even to become an ally.  This is not just my opinion; this is the opinion at the highest level of the Russian government.

“We lost a great opportunity at the end of the Cold War.  We are paying a price for the lag in world politics.  We are paying the price for all these geopolitical games, for all of this infighting for spheres of influence and for choosing very often force as a method, as a tool, we are paying a very high price for all these mistakes.

“The invasion of Iraq was a major political mistake.  It has caused the geopolitics of the world to change for the worst.  The situation in the Middle East has become more complicated.  Wherever you look, things have become worse because of the invasion of Iraq.”  (These comments were taken from an interview with USA Today that was printed on Thursday, April 6, 2006.)

COMMENT:   Of course George W. Bush wouldn’t take the advice of anyone outside of his small poorly informed circle of Texan cronies.  We need a President who will consult with a large group of well informed people.  It really didn’t require much of an expert to predict what would happen if we invaded Iraq.  The Bush Administration may have managed to unite the Sunnis and the Shiites who have been mortal enemies for centuries.  They now have a common enemy.

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY DOES HAVE A PLAN

We’ve let Karl Rove, one of the greatest propagandists since Paul Joseph Goebbels do it to us again.  The Republican Party has the public and much of the press thinking that the Democratic Party lacks direction and doesn’t have a plan for leading the nation. Every week I’ve been printing in the newsletter a portion of the Clinton County Democratic 2006 Platform which was written at the precinct caucuses and approved at the County Convention.  It’s very clear about our position on the issues.

Perhaps we need an attention getting title for our program such as some very successful ones from the past:   The New Deal, The Fair Deal, The New Frontier, The War on Poverty  and Contract for America.  Maybe we at the grassroots level could propose such a title.  Please send your suggestions to me at:   rkissack@clinton.net    Thanks for your participation.

WHAT DID CANDIDATE BILL GLUBA LEARN WHILE TALKING TO CITIZENS WHEN TRAVELING AROUND THE FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT?

Ø       Democrats want the War in Iraq to End…NOW!

Ø       Democrats want the same Healthcare coverage as members of Congress…NOW!

Ø       Democrats want to stop any attempt to privatize Social Security…NOW!

Ø       Democrats want to fix the Medicare Prescription Drug Program…NOW!

Ø       Democrats believe NAFTA + CAFTA = SHAFTA for the American worker, we need to stop the outsourcing of American jobs…NOW!

Ø       Democrats want a Congressional candidate to proudly stand up and act like a Democrat…NOW!

“While some candidates may struggle with a clear definition of their principles…I stand here today to let you know my values are crystal clear…and some things are not negotiable.  I have made ending the War in Iraq my top priority, and I have passionately campaigned on this and other issues important to Democrats since I began my campaign.”   ( Bill Gluba Democratic Candidate for Congress Iowa's First Congressional District)  Website: www.glubaforcongress.com/     Email: info@glubaforcongress.com)

WHO LET THIS GUY IN?

President Bush often holds "town hall" events where he takes questions from a hand picked crowd of "real people".  Recently one of the people was real.  In a hostile room, with the attention of the national media focused on him, Harry Taylor stood up and said to the President of the United States:

You never stop talking about freedom, and I appreciate that. But while I listen to you talk about freedom, I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges, to try to preclude me from breathing clean air and drinking clean water and eating safe food. If I were a woman, you'd like to restrict my opportunity to make a choice and decision about whether I can abort a pregnancy on my own behalf.  In my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of nor more frightened by my leadership in Washington. I feel that despite your rhetoric, that compassion and common sense have been left far behind during your administration, and I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and the grace to be ashamed of yourself inside yourself.  I really appreciate the courtesy of allowing me to speak what I'm saying to you right now. That is part of what this country is about.”  (Harry Taylor is a MoveOn member and the leader of an Operation Democracy team in Charlotte, North Carolina.)

MANY IN THE WORLD ARE AFRAID THAT A MAD MAN WILL USE NUCLEAR WEOPONS

On April 9 very reliable investigative reporters for the Washington Post,  Peter Baker, Dafna Linzer and Thomas E. Ricks, broke the story that the Bush administration is studying options for military strikes against Iran as part of a broader strategy of coercive diplomacy to pressure Tehran to abandon its alleged nuclear development program.  Some analysts believe it is more than bluster. "The Bush team is looking at the viability of air strikes simply because many think air strikes are the only real option ahead," said Kurt Campbell, a former Pentagon policy official.

The Bush Administration probably backed off because a free press exposed the plan and public indignation was tremendous.  If you think that Iraq is a quagmire, wait until Bush decides to bomb Iran.  He’ll unite the entire Arab world against us.

DO YOU THINK REPUBLICANS CARE?

v      In 2004 1.1 million more Americans slipped into poverty—now more than 37 million!

v      A host of Republicans in Congress, the White House and lobbyists are under indictment or investigation.   (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee)

CENTRAL COMMITTEE STRENGTHENED:  Vacant positions on the Clinton County Central Committee were filled at the meeting on Tuesday, April 18.  Seats filled are:  DeWitt 1st Precinct: Jim Burke, Dan Kanakares, and Hugh McAleer (alternate). DeWitt 2nd Precinct:  Ken Ernst, Richard Hnrahan and John Ivens. DeWitt Township: Steve Holub.  We need to get more representatives from Camanche.  We have been having excellent attendance and participation by members of the Central Committee.  This indicates an enthusiasm for achieving our goal of a permanently strong party in Clinton County and electing Democrats to every vacant position in the County, State Legislature and carrying the County for a Democratic Congressman and Governor.

BRUCE INGHAM will be our Democratic candidate for Clinton County Attorney.  Bruce will bring a wealth of experience to that office having served as the number one deputy for many years.  REG KAUFFMAN will be our candidate for the Iowa House District 83.  He will be running to represent us in DeWitt, Camanche and other Townships in the southern part of Clinton County and Princeton and LeClaire and other townships in northeast Scott County.  It’s important that we elect Reg to this position.  We won’t be making progress in Des Moines until we have a Democratic majority in both houses of the legislature.

THIS WE BELIEVE

(Taken from the Clinton County Democratic Party 2006 platform.)

v      We promise to appoint people to office on the basis of proven competence and not on the basis of campaign contributions.

v      We support a publicly financed system for campaigns for federal, legislative and statewide office.

v      We oppose the creation of a national ID card and the requirement that voters carry such a card in order to vote.

SENATOR ROGER STEWART IS AN ACTIVE FRIEND OF EDUCATION

It’s important that everyone who supports education actively work for the reelection of Senator Roger Stewart.  He has actively worked to pass legislation that will:

Ø       Bring Iowa teacher salaries up to the national average within three years.

Ø       Raise student achievement by having the best classroom teachers.

Ø       Provide adequate resources for schools to give kids the skills they need to succeed.

Ø       Provide quality childcare and preschool programs that will result in kindergartners who are ready to learn and ready to excel.

Ø       Provide school boards with dependable funding for school infrastructure by making the one percent sales tax statewide.

For years the Republican majority in the Iowa Legislature has opposed nearly every proposal made by the Iowa School Board Association, the Iowa State Education Association and the Iowa Parent/Teacher Association.  It seems that they have used every ploy possible to discredit public education through inadequate funding.  It will be impossible for any Republican to overcome this stigma no matter how well respected they may be.  You may learn more about Senator Stewart’s’ beliefs, plans and accomplishments on his web site:   www.rogerstewart.org

PRESIDENT GEORGE MUST HAVE SLEPT THROUGH HIS HISTORY CLASSES AT YALE

Current tensions between Muslims and the West are rooted in events nearly 1,000 years old. In 1099, Christian crusaders captured Jerusalem and massacred the city's Muslim inhabitants. By 1187 Saladin had united the fractious Muslim tribes of Syria, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Palestine through a combination of diplomacy and military might and a reputation for fairness, generosity and spirituality.

Saladin (1137-1193) launched a jihad (holy war) against the Christians and wiped out nearly the entire Christian army. As a result, he was able to capture most of the Christians' strongholds--including Jerusalem. Shocked Western leaders called for a new crusade.  For more on this epic conflict check out “Warriors of God: Richard the Lion Heart and Saladin in the Third Crusade”.

Now the Bush Administration and the Republican Party has put the United States in the middle of this centuries old conflict that threatens again to unite the Muslims against the West.  If it weren’t for oil, would we be there?

“All of us in the USA should consider it a privilege and pleasure to pay part of our income in taxes to support such things as education, security and social services.  Of course, we should object when tax money is squandered on such things as political bridges to nowhere in Alaska or President Bush’s bumbling adventure in Iraq.”  (Al Neuharth, USA Today April 14, 2006.

Allen H. Neuharth is the founder of USA Today, the flagship of the nation’s largest chain of newspapers.)

NEWS FLASH!!!!!

In an attempt to thwart the spread of bird flu, George W. Bush has bombed the Canary Islands.

(It’s so sad that this might be true with this President.)
