               CLINTON COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY NEWSLETTER

“The evidence shows that the new immigrants largely behave in positive ways similar to their predecessors. They are family oriented, they value education, and their children are learning English. Over time, they are intermarrying among growing numbers of other ethnic groups. They are people of faith. They are energetic, looking to move up in life through better jobs-they work hard and for long hours.”   (Mortimer B. Zuckerman, U.S. News & World Report)

REPUBLICANS BLOCK PASSAGE OF EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT

"Union membership can be the difference between a poverty-wage job and middle-class security. This was probably the single most important vote on the future of the middle class cast in the Senate this year.  Millions of Americans want and deserve what unions provide: health care, a secure retirement and job stability.  However, businesses regularly and illegally fight union organizing drives.

"Today, a majority of the Senate stood up to make it easier for workers to join a union.  A minority of senators showed which side they are on by blocking the bill today -- but they won't be able to block it forever.  When I'm president, we will have strong, fair labor laws.  If a Republican can join the Republican Party by signing their name to a card, any worker in America ought to be able to join a union by doing exactly the same thing."   (Senator John Edwards, 6-26-07)

CLINTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS SUPPORT STRONG

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES

At the March 31 Democratic Caucus held at Ashford University the Clinton County Democrats supported the following resolutions:

v      We support conservation practices, the use of bio-fuels and responsible use of pesticides and herbicides.

v      We support penalties for polluters.

v      We support the promotion and use of compact fluorescent light bulbs.

v      We support responsible strip mining.

v      We oppose selling of National Park land, forests and other public land to private interests.

v      We support mandating increased automotive efficiency.

v      We support developing alternative energy sources such as wind and hydrogen.

v      We encourage the United States to sign on to the Kyoto protocol.

A CONTRAST BETWEEN PRESIDENTS

“Bill Clinton was one of the most intelligent men who ever held the office of President.  He was capable of speaking off the cuff at great length about virtually any international situation or economic matter.  To hear Bill Clinton extemporize is to know that one is in the presence of uncommon brilliance.  And yet…as Dr. Phil might say, leaning across the table with eyes gleaming, ’What were you thinking?’

“Some politicians seem to prefer making war, not love.  Nobody was more determined to pick a world-wide fight than a President who will be remembered as one of the craziest—part vengeful bully, part arrogant narcissist, part organizational wimp, part closeted paranoid and a thorough disaster hunter in so many unattractive ways.  It’s no coincidence that George W. Bush and his cronies—Cheney, Rove, so many of their cohort—all built lucrative careers in the world of business, and continually, while in office, have done what was best for their business associates and families.  They’re businessmen dressed up as public servants.  And they did really well for a long, long time.  Now?  We’ll see how history remembers them.”  (from The Disaster Hunter—in Fortune 5-28-07 by Stanley Bing)

MEET OUR PRESIDENTIAL STAFFERS

One of the very pleasant things about working in Democratic politics in Clinton County is meeting many young people from various parts of the country who are here as coordinators of Presidential campaigns.

Joe Corallo is the Clinton area coordinator for the Hillary Clinton campaign.  He was born in Huntington, New York and grew up in Bethpage New York.  He has three younger brothers.  He has been a member of the Japanese Karate Association since he was four and has attained the rank of second degree black belt.  He went through public school as well as going through Catholic Religion education until 7th grade.  He graduated from Bethpage High School with a Regents Diploma in May 2003. He entered Hofstra University for his undergraduate degree in the Fall of 2003.  In his first semester he was a founding member of the Hofstra University Gamers and was elected president the following semester.  After graduation he received an internship in Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's Washington D.C. office and served as her legislative intern for more than three months.  He graduated with a dual degree in political science and history with a minor in philosophy. The day after graduating he came to Iowa to begin work on Hillary Clinton's Presidential Campaign.

DICK CHENEY KNOWS HOW TO GET SECRETS FROM HIS ENEMIES

In an effort to avoid disclosing information about his actions, Dick Cheney claimed he's not part of the Executive branch. However, he's not the in Judicial or the Legislative branch and he tries to claim executive privilege when he wants it.  In reality Cheney is the Mob Boss behind the scenes at the White House. Like most egomaniacal criminals, he thinks he's above the law.

A VIEW OF INTOLERANCE FROM JERRY FALWELL

The late Jerry Falwell was the darling of the Christian Coalition that under George W. Bush has gained significant influence over the policies of the Republican Party.  Here is just one of the many examples of his extreme intolerance:  “In reference to 9/11: ‘I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America.  I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

Iowa's First District Workshop Report

Clinton County once again had a strong activist contingent at the district level. If you weren't in attendance the 1st District workshop this year, you missed the chance to see and hear three presidentials, (Edwards, Biden, Obama) surrogates for other candidates, Speaker of the Iowa House Pat Murphy, and of course, "THE" congressional rookie sensation-our very own Bruce Braley. There were also nine different breakout sessions on topics from the environment to the internet, and a mock caucus was also held. (Rhubarb Pie wins mock caucus!) Many thanks to Jean Pardee, the District Central committee, and all of the volunteers for putting together a first class training session. In the coming months workshop attendees will be sharing what they learned with the central committee so we can incorporate the training into Clinton County to help build a stronger party.

The war in Iraq

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Editorial:
Sunday, July 15, 2007

Perhaps Jack Murtha put it best: The Pennsylvania congressman, among the first to make the cogent argument that staying the course in Iraq was the exercise in futility that indeed the war has become, says President Bush is delusional.

Based on the president's recent performance, we could not agree more. "Staying the course" is not simply futile -- it is a prescription for American suicide.

We've urged for months to bring our troops home. Now is the time.

"Progress" has become such a nuanced, parsed and tortured term that it no longer has meaning.

The "fledgling" Iraqi government -- how long can it reasonably be called that? -- consistently> has not stepped up to the plate.

President Bush warns that U.S. withdrawal would risk "mass killings on a horrific scale." What do we have today, sir?

And quite frankly, during last Thursday's news conference, when George Bush started blathering about "sometimes the decisions you make and the consequences don't enable you to be loved," we had to question his mental stability.

If the president won't do the right thing and end this war, the people must. The House has voted to withdraw combat troops from Iraq by April. The Senate must follow suit.

Our brave troops should take great pride that they rid Iraq of Saddam Hussein. And they should have no shame in leaving Iraq. For it will not be, in any way, an exercise in tail-tucking and running.

America has done its job.

It's time for the Iraqis to do theirs.
