The person who believes that the Democratic Party isn’t united on a plan for the State and Nation is under the spell of another lie by Karl Rove and his hatchet men. Look at the legislative proposals = of the Iowa Democratic Party: <= /o:p>

Renewable Energy: Ame= rica's energy future is at the mercy of price-gouging oil companies and volatile <= u1:place u2:st=3D"on">Middle East governments who are accountable to no one. But Iowa is uniquely positioned to break their stranglehold on our economy. Iowa has energy alternatives - corn-based ethanol, soy-based diesel, and wind en= ergy - that can reduce our dependence on fossill fuels. Democrats want to bring our universities together with the bio-= tech industry to make Iowa a world leader in the research and development of alternative fuels and renewable energy. And we will promote increased sales of 85% ethanol blended gasoline.

Democrats believe that hardworking Iowans who play by the rules should be rewarded with the prosperity they've earned. Let's remove t= he roadblocks to success that the irresponsibility of others places in Iowans' way. Let's stop getting pushed around by the special interests and start to push back. This is our state. It's time to restore order and put Iowans bac= k in charge. CONGRATULATIONS!

The= Democrats of Clinton County had two more very successful events over the Fourth of Ju= ly weekend. We had a large turnout and show of support for the Democrats= in the Riverboat Days Parade Friday, June 30. We had two floats, four convertibles, bicycles, three banners and many walkers carrying signs. = ; We had almost all of the candidates and office holders for County, State and Congress. Among those taking part in the parade were: Congressional Candidate Bruce <= span class=3DSpellE>Braley, State Senators Frank Wood and Roger Stewart, = State Representatives Polly Bukta and Tom Schueller, candidate for the 83rd House District Reg Kauffman, County Attorney candidate Bruce Ingham, Clinton City Council member Bob Soesbe and scho= ol board member Wendy Krajnovich. We had a strong turnout from labor and education unions (NEA). It was a far bigger demonstrat= ion of support than the Republicans showed.

Aft= er the parade about fifty people gathered at Democratic Headquarters for a picnic. Thanks to all the people who helped. They really p= ut in a lot of work.

FACTS ABOUT IOWA

IOWA NOW A NET EXPO= RTER OF ETHANOL: Last year, = Iowa consumed 1.6 billion gallons of ethanol in petroleum-based gasoline. = At the end of May, Frontier Ethanol began production near Gowrie, while Hawkey= e Renewables began production near Fairbank. These two plants put Iowa over the 1.6 bi= llion gallon mark of ethanol produced, making Iowa a net exporter.

Iowa is= first in the nation in ethanol production capacity and is second in the nation in= biodiesel production. There are currently twenty ethanol plants in production with seven more under construction and nine in= the planning stages. When those plants are built and producing ethanol, Iowa will produce over 2.35 billion gallons each year. (from S= tate Representative Polly Bukta’s July 3 legis= lative newsletter)

IS ‘BIG BROTHER’ LISTENING?

What’s next on this familiar road to tyranny? Domestic spy programs may be= far broader than previously thought. The National Security Agency (NSA) has secretly eavesdropped on hundreds and possibly thousands of Americans witho= ut obtaining warrants. The NSA is engaged in large “data mining” operation, plumbing through U.S.= phone calls and e-mails in search of terrorist links.

The FBI= has targeted animal rights, environmental and antiwar groups, including Roman Catholic peace activists, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals and Greenpeace. The Defense Depar= tment intelligence operatives are keeping tabs on groups protesting the Iraq war and military recruiting efforts. The New York City Police Department undercover officers have joined antiwar and even bicycle-rider rallies in the name of national security.

Among t= he strong supporters of the extensive surveillance is Vice President Dick Chen= ey. (Does this surprise you?) Pre= sident Bush continues to defy the law and insist that he has the power to order wiretaps without warrants whenever he wants. Even many Republicans in Congress = are concerned. Education: We need to raise standards and demand greater accountability from our public schools, = too. Teachers must be certified as proficient in the subjects they teach. Teache= rs need more authority to enforce discipline in the classroom so children learn personal responsibility and accountability at an early age. Students must m= eet higher standards in reading, math, science and history before they're allow= ed to graduate. It is disgracefu= l that Iowa has slipped in national teacher pay rankings. You get what you pay for, and Iowa can't continue to attract and retain top quality teachers if their pay is n= ot competitive. We need to raise teac= her pay.

Health Insurance: Most= small businesses, farmers and self-employed Iowans want to take responsibility and provide health insurance for themselves, their families and their employees, but high costs make it nearly impossible.&= nbsp; Democrats want to create health care insurance purchasing pools that allow individuals, farmers and small businesses to join together to leverage their buying power and negoti= ate for lower health insurance premiums.

ONWARD TO VICTORY IN NOVEMBER!=

ED FALLON’S CANDIDACY HAD A SIGNIFICANT POLITICAL IMPACT STATEWIDE

= 220;One of the things that went into Ed Fallon's relatively strong showing, 26 perc= ent of the vote, was Ed Fallon grew as a candidate throughout the course of that campaign. And that's one of the things that -- one of the great challenges = we face is to measure a candidate who is going to grow into the job. As he was= in the race for governor, Fallon grew. He got more thoughtful. He got more focused. He got more -- you get better as a candidate. And as a result, he = was able to attract that Democratic left that's alienated and angry. He also was able to attract a group of disaffected Republicans who are unhappy with that sort of rightward drift of the Republican Party and looking for somebody to voice their message. He actually can be a key figure in this fall's election because the voters who turned out = for Ed Fallon are voters that have to show up if Chet Culver is to have a chance f= or winning this election in the fall.&nbs= p; Ed Fallon will be a very important person for Chet Culver come the f= all election. On = July 7 State Representative Polly Bukta and Senator Ro= ger Stewart sponsored a community political rally at Eagle Point Lodge. Senator Evan = Bayh of Indiana was the guest speaker. The pu= blic and the press were cordially invited. The Democratic Party, the Party of the average American, welcomes everybody to their events regardless of their ability to contribute. In the meantime Karl Rove, Dick Ch= eney and George Bush continue to meet with small groups of wealthy supporters at dinners that cost from $250. to $2,000. a plate.

KARL ROVE HOLDS = TOP SECRET FUND RAISERS FOR MIKE WHALEN

= 220;Karl Rove—President Bush’s chief strategist known within the White H= ouse as ‘The Architect’—visited Iowa recently to hold fundrais= ers for his newest understudy: Mike Whalen.&nb= sp; Karl Rove came to Iowa= to support Mr. Whalen because he knows that Whalen will be a rubber stamp for failed George Bu= sh policies, especially his risky Social Security privatization scheme and opposition to increasing the minimum wage.= By aligning himself with President Bush, Mike Whalen promises to bri= ng us more of what has hurt this country: more failed policies, more corruption, = and more looking out for special interests.

= 220;We can’t afford to send a rubber stamp for George W. Bush to Congress who will only give us more of the same. Our country is heading in the wro= ng direction and it is time for a change.&nbs= p; (When) I’m elected to Congress, I will stand up for working families in Washington and be a strong, independent voice to change the direction of this country. COMMENT: On June 26 Karl Rove, Minister of Popular Enlightenment = for the Bush Administration, was = in Davenport to hold a TOP SECRET= fund raiser for his buddy, Mike Whalen. There were 75 invited guests who paid $250. each= to hear Mr. Rove. The dinner was closed to the publi= c and the press. Karl Rove is one o= f the most successful propagandist and experts in psychological warfare since the ruthless Paul Joseph Goebbels in the 1930s.

PRESIDENT BUSH’S FAILED LEADERSHIP IN IRAQ

“Lost and fa= cing failure in Iraq, President Bush can't bring himself to ask for directions or change course. = His policy in a shambles, he refuses to admit mistakes.

“It's time to impose some adult supervision on this wayward President. It's time to chart= a new, reality-based course for America and Iraq. I offered a resolution in the Sena= te calling for redeployment of U.S. troops out of Iraq by December 31.

“Three years= after ‘mission accomplished’ was declared on the USS Abraham Lincoln,= we still have 133,000 troops on the ground in = Iraq. We are building what appear to be permanent military bases. We are construc= ting a Baghdad<= /u2:place> embassy that will span 104 acres, the size of 80 football fields. This President's call to ‘stay the course’ must look to Iraqis like = it means ‘stay forever’.

“President B= ush's approach gives rise to suspicions that the = United States has long-term designs on Iraq and its oil. It has deprived the government there of incentive to resolve i= ts internal divisions and stand on its own feet. With the war in its fourth ye= ar, the President's course appears bound for continued stalemate and stagnation= .

“My resoluti= on does three things: (1) It states that the United States should not maintain a permanent military presenc= e or military bases in Ir= aq. (2) It declares that the United States should not attemp= t to control the flow of Iraqi oil. And (3) it directs that US Armed Forces shou= ld be redeployed from Iraq= as soon as practicable after the completion of Iraq's constitution-making process or December 31, 2006, whichever comes first. A companion bill to my resolution has been offered with bipartisan co-sponsor= ship in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Mike Thompson of California.

“To their everlasting credit, our troops have accomplished the tasks they were sent to achieve, despite disastrous decisions by civilian leaders in Washington. Iraqis now have a democratically elected government. It's time to bring hom= e as many troops as possible, and to redeploy as many as necessary to fight al Q= aeda and others who pose a real threat to our national security. The President's invasion of Iraq was a strategic blunder, a fatal diversion from our pursuit of those who attacked us on 9/11. The time has come to get out of Iraq and adopt a smarter approach to national security.” (Senator Tom Harkin)

At the July meeting of the Clinton County Democratic Central Committee three Democrats were nominated to fill vacancies. Myrna Weller – Camanche 1, Bob Miller - = Camanche 2, and Larry Kne= ss - <Clinton First Ward First Precinct.   A final vote on these nominees will be taken at the August 15 meeting. <= /o:p>

OBSERVATIONS OF IRRESPONSIBILI= TY

Ther= e is a Republican candidate for the State Legislature who has been going door to d= oor in Clinton. He talks constantly about the evils of taxes and how he’s going to lower all taxes. Anybody who believes his pandering= is naïve. Not once does he mention the responsibility of the government to support the police, firefighters, schools, environmental programs, national defense etc. = He must be the candidate of the irresponsible and ignorant. Democrats believe that the legitimate function = of government is to meet needs that cannot be met individually. Responsible people gladly pay their taxes to support these programs. The government represents the people. It isn’t some select alien group except maybe in the case of the Bush Administration= .

Earlier in the campaign this s= ame Republican candidate said that when he gets to Des Moines he will begin to rewrite the entire Iowa Code.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> When I told several lawyers about = this they almost fainted.

George W. Bush is again propos= ing privatization of social security. Even some of his own Party are aghast at = this prospect. George was proved w= rong once, but he never learns from his mistakes.

Feingold: Iraq is defining issue<= /span>

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingo= ld, D-Wisconsin toured Iowa recently stopping= in Clinton and Dubuque to listen to issues raised by Democrats. “Voter unrest over the war in <= u2:place u3:st=3D"on">Iraq has elevated foreign policy issues to a rare level of importance in Democra= tic politics and is the top concern at the moment.”

Fei= ngold has been among the harshest critics of the war in Iraq and has urged a pullout of troops. Feingold said voters are looking at politicians’ positions on t= he war as a fundamental statement.

Feingold said Democrats traditionally focus more on domestic issues. But un= rest over the war has changed that. “What will be different about this is that foreign policy and the whole internati= onal set of issues will be very important,” Fein= gold said.
