CLINTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS SUPPORT HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AMERICANS

At the March 31 Democratic Caucus held at Ashford University the Clinton County Democrats supported the following resolutions:

  1. We support national healthcare for all Americans.
  2. We should have dental, optical and mental health care for all children and adults.
  3. We should provide free or reduced cost health testing services for all Americans.

IS THE AVERAGE AMERICAN’S HEALTH AS IMPORTANT AS

DICK CHENEY’S WHO IS A HIGH RISK EXPENSIVE PATIENT?

IT’S ABOUT TIME WE SET SOME PRIORITIES.

SENATOR OBAMA UNVEILS HIS PLAN FOR

UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE BY THE END OF HIS FIRST TERM

Senator Obama was among the first candidates to promise universal health care by the end of his first term.  Last week he renewed his commitment by laying out a plan on how to get our country there.  In Iowa City, Senator Obama introduced his plan to reduce health care costs.

Obama’s three part plan builds upon the strengths of the U.S. health care system.  It includes innovative State efforts and addresses glaring weaknesses such as affordability. The Obama plan will save a typical American family up to $2,500 every year on medical expenditures by:

(1) providing affordable, comprehensive and portable health coverage for every American;

(2) modernizing the U.S. health care system to contain spiraling health care costs and improve the quality of patient care; and (3) promoting prevention and strengthening public health to prevent disease and protect against natural and man-made disasters.

The Obama plan will: (1) establish a new public insurance program available to Americans who neither qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP nor have access to insurance through their employers, as well as to small businesses that want to offer insurance to their employees; (2) make available the National Health Insurance Exchange to help Americans and businesses that want to purchase private health insurance directly; (3) require all employers to contribute to health coverage for their employees; (4) mandate that all children have health care coverage;

(5) expand Medicaid and SCHIP to cover more of the least well-off among us; and (6) allow State flexibility for state health reform plans.  (Go to the following web site for a fact sheet with more details on Obama’s plan: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/)

SENATOR JOE BIDEN IMPRESSES CLINTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS

Sunday evening, May 27, Senator Joe Biden spoke to more than seventy Clinton County Democrats from the front porch of the Lyons Train Depot just a block from the Mississippi River.  To add to the rural Iowa setting a train went through just as the Senator began his talk.  The engineer waved to the crowd.  We learned later in the evening that Senator Biden was a friend of Congressman John Culver who played a key role in getting the dike for Clinton.

Everyone was impressed with the depth of knowledge shown by the Senator and his very definite plans for Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur, energy, nuclear weapons, jobs, health care, access to higher education, “The No Child Left Behind” law, homeland security, crime and climate change.  The list of problems faced by this country is long and has been mostly neglected by the Bush Administration.  He said that he is the best candidate because of his many years of experience, his knowledge of world affairs and his friendship with many world leaders.  He would be prepared to hit the ground running as President.  We don’t have time for a President to learn on the job.  That was the chief problem with George W. Bush.  Then, he never did learn anything!

After the Town Hall meeting Senator Biden, his wife Jill and daughter stood in front of the depot with about twenty Clinton County Democrats and continued to discuss issues.  We encourage you to learn much more about the Senator by visiting his web site http://www.joebiden.com

AN EXAMPLE OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION’S LOGIC?

  1. We are in a world wide war to fight terrorism.
  2. Tuberculosis bacteria may be used as a weapon of mass destruction.
  3. Therefore, we will cut funding to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to be used in its efforts to combat and contain a deadly bio-weapon attack.

They seem to be totally incapable of making the connection.

CLINTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS WANT EFFECTIVE HOMELAND SECURITY

At the March 31 Democratic Caucus held at Ashford University the Clinton County Democrats supported the following resolutions:

  1. We should have a national plan providing security for school children from terrorism through developing awareness, security in buildings and training.
  2. We should prevent the introduction of disease in livestock by providing for security in the feed supply, awareness and providing training for producers and suppliers.
  3. We should increase the funding available for inspection of shipping containers and airline cargo.

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY REPRESENTS FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

GOOD NEWS ON THE STATE BUDGET FROM SENATOR FRANK WOOD

I’m happy to report some good news with regard to the state budget.  This year, the Legislature adopted better budgeting practices while working in a bipartisan manner to keep our commitments to Iowa’s students, families and communities.

“The budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 leaves Iowa in a better financial condition than last year.  Because we committed to sound budgeting practices, the Legislature was able to provide $28 million in property tax payments.  This is a step in the right direction after years of dipping into our ending balance to cover property tax payments.

“Unlike the federal government, the state budget is balanced.  We met Iowa’s expenditure limitation law, which limits our spending to 99 percent of our revenues.

“Most impressively, our state savings accounts are full at $592 million, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency.  Not only is that more than we’ve ever had in our rainy day accounts, it’s a growth of more than $400 million in the last four years.

I’m also glad to note that since 2004, we have repaid $163 million of the $300 million owed to the Senior Living Trust Fund.

“When the Legislature reconvenes in January, we will continue to make tough budget decisions in order to fund Iowa’s top priorities.  As a watchdog for your tax dollars, it’s important to me that you get the biggest bang for your buck.  I want your money spent wisely and efficiently and won’t continue programs that don’t meet goals and expectations.  (State Senator Frank Wood)

COMMENT:  It’s amazing that the State Legislature gave the Governor everything he wanted, raised only the cigarette tax which goes into a special health care fund, restored money that had been borrowed from special accounts and still balanced the budget.  Tax revenue increased because Iowa is experiencing a growing economy.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT THE TERRORISTS HAVE OUTWITTED THE

BUSH/CHENEY BUNCH?   WILL THE EXAMPLES OF INCOMPETENCE EVER END?

A Shattered Nation, but Not a Bloodbath!

Will we ever know when Bush is telling the truth?

“Anthony Cordesman, a highly respected analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says the Bush administration has ‘grossly overstated the very real risks’ in setting timelines for withdrawal from Iraq. A rushed pullout might lead to an all-out civil war or bloodbath, but probably would simply leave a shattered nation in lingering pain and division.’   He is also skeptical that Iraq would become an al Qaeda training ground, citing Sunni, Shiite, and Kurdish resistance to the group and the fact that al Qaeda already conducts training in 11 other nations.  (From White House Week in U.S. News & World Report, May 14, 2007)

“Americans should be concerned about the rain forests in Africa.  They are the lungs of the world.  As environmental damage spreads, as people get more and more desperate, as water levels drop, you're increasing the risk of major health epidemics, you are causing unrest that can lead to instability, and instability in other countries, as we have proof, can lead to problems in the United States.”     (Dr. Jane Goodall in an interview with Will Sullivan in the May 14 issue of U.S. News & World Report.

CLINTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS WANT FAIRER ELECTIONS

At the March 31 Democratic Caucus held at Ashford University the Clinton County Democrats supported the following resolutions:

  1. We should have public financing of political campaigns.
  2. We should have better security of voting devices including a paper audit.
  3. We should have the ability to verify that a person voted and that the vote was counted.
  4. We should encourage absentee voting.
  5. We should make the general election day a national holiday.
  6. The closing time for polls for all elections should be standard, 8:00 P.M.
  7. We should keep the Iowa caucuses first in the nation.

ILLINOIS SENATOR TERRY LINK VISITS CLINTON

Photograph of Senator Terry Link (D)

On Saturday, June 9, members of the Clinton County Democratic Party had the opportunity to discuss issues with Illinois State Senator Terry Link concerning the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama.  Senator Link represents the 30th Senate District which is in Lake County north of Chicago. He is serving his fourth term and is the senate majority caucus chair.  He is a long time friend of Senator Obama and was in Clinton to help in the neighborhood canvass.  He gave us several good examples of Senator Obama’s skill and experience bringing Democrats and Republicans together on issues both in the Illinois and United States Senates.

REPUBLICAN COMEDY

(It’s so sad it borders on being humorous.)

A present for "W":   Laura Bush bought George a parrot for his birthday.  She told Dick Cheney, "The bird is so smart!  George has already taught him to pronounce over 200 words!'  "Wow, that's pretty impressive," Cheney said.  "But you realize that he just says the words.  He doesn't understand what they mean."  "That's okay," Laura replied.  "Neither does the parrot."
