Bush's Failed Presidency:  “Unfortunately for President Bush, most people in the world have judged him and it isn't pretty. This incompetent, selfish, self centered man and his incompetent with malice vice president have done great harm to America. My hope is that no great harm will be caused by Bush/Cheney in the time left before we see the last of them. These two are very scary people.”    (Vicki Friedman of LA in usnews.com)

I’m also not very analytical.  You know I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about myself, about why I do things.”

ANOTHER HISTORY LESSON FOR GEORGE W. BUSH

(He claims to have majored in history at Yale.)

Attila (406453), also known as Attila the Hun or the Scourge of God is remembered in much of Western Europe as the epitome of cruelty and rapacity.  At the wish of Emperor Valentinian III, Pope Leo I, accompanied by the Consul Avienus and the Prefect Trigetius, met Attila at Mincio in the vicinity of Mantua, and obtained from him the promise that he would withdraw from Italy and negotiate peace with the emperor.

RESCUE OUR NATION AND OUR REPUTATION FROM THE DAMAGES

OF GEORGE W. BUSH, DICK CHENEY, JOHN MCCAIN AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

It is looking increasingly as if John McCain really knows nothing about Iran despite wanting to bomb them.  Last week in his big non-proliferation speech McCain took his gaffes to a new level. He actually invented 20 years of negotiations between the United States and Tehran. In his speech, McCain said:

"Today, some people seem to think they've discovered a brand new cause, something no one before them ever thought of. Many believe all we need to do to end the nuclear programs of hostile governments is have our president talk with leaders in Pyongyang and Tehran, as if we haven't tried talking to these governments repeatedly over the past two decades."

McCain has clearly forgotten what Max Bergmann points out:  The stated policy of the United States since April 7, 1980 has been that we don't talk to the Iranians. Never has the United States had communications, or tried to have communications, with the Iranian government on their nuclear program. Iran's nuclear communications have been limited to working through the European Union (led by France and Germany, countries John McCain has referred to as "vacuous" and "posturing").

Taken with his other many gaffes on Iran (repeated Sunni/Shia screw up, the use of Khamenei and Ahmajinedad interchangeably) there should be real questions about whether McCain has any knowledge of U.S.-Iranian relations. Given that this one was in his prepared text it also makes you wonder what his foreign policy team actually knows about Iran. For a man running for President on his foreign policy aptitude such confusion should sound alarm bells.

NEGOTIATING ISN’T APPEASEMENT

Addressing Israel’s Knesset, President Bush clumsily inserted American politics into a ceremonial address marking the sixtieth anniversary of Israel’s statehood.  Bush invoked ‘Nazi tanks’ rolling into Poland in 1939, adding ‘We have an obligation to call this what it is—the false comfort of appeasement.”  Bush clone Senator John McCain eagerly jumped in:  ‘The President is exactly right.’

“In a speech to the Israeli parliament President Bush took a swipe at Barack Obama for his willingness to negotiate with evil regimes. Bush, McCain and other conservatives are on the wrong side of history when they dismiss Obama's foreign policy.

“If there is anything that has been discredited by history, it is the argument that every enemy is Hitler, that negotiations constitute appeasement and that talking will automatically lead to a slaughter of Holocaust-like proportions. It is an argument that conservatives made throughout the Cold War, and, if the charge seemed overblown at the time, it seems positively ludicrous with the clarity of hindsight.”  (Excerpted from an article by  J. Peter Scoblic, executive editor of the New Republic and the author of ‘U.S. vs. Them: How a Half Century of Conservatism Has Undermined America's Security.’)

CLINTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS SCORE BIG IN COUNTY PRIMARY

79% of the nearly 3000 citizens voting in the Clinton County June 3 primary were Democrats.  This turnout demonstrates a strong enthusiasm among Democrats and a dedication to fulfilling their civic responsibilities.  We’ll win every race in November if we continue this tremendous participation.  We had two contested races with candidates conducting strong campaigns.  It was a very fair election and we thank all candidates for their participation.  Now we hope that everyone will continue their loyalty to the Democratic Party in November by supporting the primary election winners.

"Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world."

WHY DON’T WE DISCUSS THE MANY REAL PROBLEMS FACING OUR NATION?

Viewers of all political persuasions have been affronted by presidential debate moderators’ failure to ask about the mortgage crisis, health care, the environment, torture, education, China policy, the pending G.I. bill to aid veterans, or the war we’re losing in Afghanistan.  Time has been devoted to recycling the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bosnian sniper fire and lame questions about a possible “dream ticket”.

News people have tried to strong-arm Democratic candidates into forgoing any increases in the capital gains tax. The capital gains tax! That’s just the priority Americans are focusing on as they lose their houses and jobs, and as gas prices reach $4 a gallon. This question was asked on the same day that is was announced that the top 50 hedge fund managers made a total of $29 billion in 2007, some of them by betting against the mortgage market.  (Frank Rich in the New York Times, April 20, 2008)
