WARNING FLAGS FLY AT BUSH-CHENEY EVENTS

Frequently the best observations and comments concerning the Bush/Cheney Administration’s threats to our freedom of speech and American Democratic values come from ordinary citizens as expressed by Susan Pence of Davenport in this letter printed in the Quad City Tim= es on Friday, August 18.

“Thanks to the Times for covering the protest during Dick Cheney’s recent visit. The disturbing photo showed a few demonstrators, one an elderly woman, whose sm= all flags had just been confiscated as “potential weapons” by a pol= ice officer. These people were there peacefully protesting Bush-Cheney policies= .

“A few d= ays later came more stories of peaceful protesters all over our country where Republican rallies were in progress who were then arrested, even strip searched! All for wearing shirts with anti-Bush statements and carrying pro= test signs. Some of them have since filed lawsuits over the unjust treatment.

”This administration seems to believe it has a right to do whatever it pleases to achieve its ends, whether that means cutting taxes for its rich supporters, violating our personal rights, trampling on our environment or human rights abuses. Now that= even some thoughtful Republicans are questioning and voicing opposition to certa= in policies, it should be obvious to anyone that a problem exists.”=

ANOTHER OBSERVATION:   It’s treasonous to criticize the President’s Iraq War policy. It’s naïve to shape our foreign policy using knowledge ba= sed on the history of the Middle = East.

PUBLIC FORUM ON THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN

<= span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>Senator Roger Stewart will lead a discussion of how= we can better protect our children from danger while using the internet on Mon= day, September 18, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Graphic Design Center, 1951 Manufacturing Drive, Clinton. Roger has invited Steve Bogle, director of the Division of Criminal Investiga= tion, who works with the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force to part= icipate in the discussion.

Senator Stewart recently proposed an increase in the funds used by the task force, which allows local, state and federal law enforcement agencies across Iowa = to work together to conduct reactive and proactive investigations of sexual exploitation of children over the internet. So far this year, the task force has participated in more than 80 arrests.

By becoming more aggressive in our efforts against online sex offenders, we wi= ll discourage criminals from targeting Iowa children, but the solution to this problem goes beyond law enforcement efforts. That's why the meeting's agenda will also include informatio= n on what parents and children can do. Jack Pr= ingle, former principal of Buell Elementary School in Clinton, will be on hand to discuss steps parents can take to better protect their children.

THIS ADMINISTRATION CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO PROVIDE NATIONAL SECURITY

“People tr= ust Democrats to handle our national security. In recent CBS News and ABC News polls, more people trust Democrats to make the right decisions on Iraq. And in the latest Newsweek poll, nearly two-thirds of Americans agree that = the war in Iraq has not made us safer from terrorism. Meanwhile, as Iraq descends into civil war and becomes a new training ground for international terrorists, cargo coming into our country still isn't being inspected.

REPUBLICANS CONT= INUE TO DISCOURAGE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION

= 220;Harvard University invited former Irani= an President Mohammad Khatami to speak to its stud= ents and much of the right-wing world is outraged. Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney says he is outraged and that the State won't provide K= hatami police protection. The Boston Herald says it is outraged.=

“The Dean of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government felt so pressured by all the criticism that he felt moved to issue a statement defending the school. ‘Do we listen to those we di= sagree with and vigorously challenge them or do we close our ears completely,̵= 7; Dean David Ellwood said. Have= we really come to this state? Have we really gotten to the point in our societ= y where the former leader of a sovereign nation is considered to be so dangerous to= our innocent souls that we want to refuse him a right to speak to college stude= nts?

“Khatami was in the United States to speak at the United Nations. In Chicago he made a speech asserting that American foreign policy triggers terrorism = and violence in the world. That m= ay not be a message we want to hear and it may not be an accurate message. But it's certainly a message we might want to think about before we dismiss it out-o= f-hand.

“One reason for= all the anger about the Harvard speech is that it was delivered on the eve of t= he fifth anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Kh= atami was president of Iraq from 1997 to 2005. The fact that this date enters the debate at all suggests the real problem we face. Iran had no more to do with the 9/11 attacks than did Iraq. Khatami had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks= . Why, then, do we find it an insult that Khatami woul= d be allowed to speak to Harvard students on Sept. 10, 2006?
“I think this paranoia is an unfortunate result of the ‘War on . . .’ we seem= to be engaged in as a nation. We've never known quite what to call it, though = the President seems to have decided we are at war with Islamic Fascists, whoever they may be. We never seem to= have a clear idea of who our enemy might be - so anyone who comes along tends to= be lumped into the enemy category. Khatami keeps calling for ‘dialogue’ as a= means of resolving issues between the U.S. and Iran. T= hat may be the part of his message most disturbing to his critics.

“There is a pow= erful faction within this country that wants us to go to war with Iran, apparently because the invasion of Iraq has been such a big success. = Newt Gingrich, speaking in Maine called on the country to ‘profoundly rethink’ its position on Iran and get tough with that nation's government. ‘You don't appease your enemies - you defeat them . . .’ he said. He's not the only one talking about defeat, not appease politics. v      Transfer control of public lan= d and minerals to large International Corporations.

NUMBERS SHOW POOR GETTING FURT= HER BEHIND   “What’s the percen= tage in keeping the minimum wage at $5.15 an hour? After nine years? This is suc= h an unnecessary and nasty Republican move. Congress has voted seven times to ra= ise its own wages since last the minimum wage budged. Of course, Congress always raises its own salary in the dark of night, hoping no one will notice. But = now it does the same with the minimum wage, quietly killing it.

Anyone who doesn’t think this is a country where the rich are getting richer= and the poor are getting poorer needs to check the numbers. According to the current issue of = Mother Jones:

v      One in four U.S. jobs pays less than a poverty-level income.        =             &nb= sp;            =       =

v      Since 2000, the number of Amer= icans living below the poverty line at any one time has risen steadily. Now, 13 percent — 37 million Americans — are officially poor.

v      Bush’s tax cuts (extended until 2010) save those earning between $20,000 and $30,000 an average of $1= 0 a year, while those making $1 million are saved $42,700.

v      In 2002, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, compared those who point out such statistics to Adolph Hitler (sure= ly he meant Stalin?).

v      Bush has diverted $750 million= to “healthy marriages” by shifting funds from social services, mos= tly childcare.

v      Bush has proposed cutting hous= ing programs for low-income people with disabilities by 50 percent.<= /span>

v      Benefits for executives now ac= count for a significant share of pension obligations in the United States, an average of 8 percent (of large companies). Sometimes a company’s obligation for a single executive’s pension approaches $100 million.

v      As a result, the savings that companies make by curtailing pensions of regular retirees — which have totaled billions of dollars in recent years — can mask a rising cost = of benefits for executives.”

“It is so discouraging to watch this country become less and less fair — “justice for all” seems like an embarrassingly archaic tag. Republicans have rigged the “lottery of life” in this country in ways we don’t even know about yet. The new bankruptcy law = is unfair, and the new college loan rules are worse. The system has been stack= ed so that large corporations have an inside track over small businesses in getting government contracts. We won’t see the full consequences of t= his mean and careless legislation for years, but it is starting to affect us already.” (from an arti= cle by Molly Ivens 7-14-06)
